Hi there! Welcome to Booktomato. Today, we are reading a picture book that is a new take on a classic fable - The Tortoise and The Hare.
We all know this familiar fable. The tortoise and the hare are going to race, and of course, the hare is much faster than the tortoise and will win. He gets overconfident, and his arrogance causes him to lose the race. In this retelling, a big sister, Stella, challenges her little brother, Roy, to a bike race in the park one day with the prize being a bag of popcorn. Stella is bigger and rides a big wheel bike that is much faster than her toddler brother's ride-on toy. Surely, she will win. Along the path, Stella gets distracted by things she stops and sees like turtles in the pond or beautiful flowers. While she keeps stopping, Roy keeps right on rolling. His slow and steady work wins the race, but like a good brother, he shares is popcorn prize.
My three year old loved this story because he is a little brother like Roy, and he was quite satisfied to see the little brother win for once. This book is for little siblings everywhere!
Story Time Conversations:
- Why did Stella lose the race? Why did Roy win the race?
- Name three things that Stella sees along the path.
- Roy shares his prize. Would you share your prize?
