Trust me on this - you and your kids need to read El Deafo by Cece Bell! Let me tell you why. It's well written and well drawn. It moves quickly and keeps the kiddos attention while also developing complex and endearing characters. It deals with some difficult subjects with humor and tenderness. And oh yeah, its funny!
Cece is a normal kid in every way. She deals with social awkwardness, best friends, boy crushes, and school work. The only difference between Cece and her classmates is that Cece is deaf. At the start of the book, Cece goes to a school for the deaf, and all of her classmates are just like her. But when her family moves, Cece must go to a new school where being deaf makes her different. She imagines that being deaf is her super power, and with it, she becomes El Deafo! This is one of those books that I bought for my son but ended up stealing it and reading it myself. I highly recommend El Deafo not only for the way it expands minds on the subjects of diversity and disability, but also because its just a honest-to-goodness good book.
