Do you know what your day needs right this very second? Cute woodland critters doing cute woodland stuff! Add a fun story that teaches numbers and you've got today's book pick - Counting with Barefoot Critters by Minnesota artist and author, Teagan White.
Each page features a number from one to ten and with each number increase, more critter friends join the party. Through the story, critter friends make pancakes, explore nature, pretend to be pirates, and so much more. Preschoolers will love the book because it is really active. The critters are full of energy going from one spirited activity to another with gusto! The illustrations are sweetly painted in watercolors. I just can't get enough of woodland scenes, and each page is peppered with cute forest details like toadstools, acorns, leaves flowing in the breeze, and wavy birch trees. This is also a great book for a reluctant learner. My four year old is somewhat of a reluctant learner when I try to work with him on numbers or letters. He is receptive with other people like his preschool teacher or his dad, but for some reason, whenever I try to play a counting game or sing the alphabet, he is having none of it. When he does this, I just shrug it off and move on to something else with him because I don't want to push and make him hate numbers/letters. This book went over really well with him because even though the numbers are there, and counting is a big part of the story, there is so much other story going on that he didn't find the educational aspect overbearing.
This is my first book by author White, and after a bit of research, I found that White has a lot of other books that look equally entertaining, so we will be seeking them out soon!
